Do you find yourself daydreaming about the crisp mountain air, the breath-taking views, and the sense of freedom that only nature can provide? If you're gearing up for a day out in the hills, or if you've been curious about what to pack and why, you've come to the right place! Here's a handy starter guide to ensure your next mountain or hill adventure is nothing short of spectacular.
What is the reason for preparing for a day trip to the hills?
Before we dive into the essentials, let's address the burning question: why bother packing for a day out in the hills? Well, the answer is simple – preparation is key! Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a newbie explorer, having the right gear can make all the difference between a thrilling adventure and a disastrous trek. From safety to comfort, packing strategically ensures you're ready for whatever the mountains may throw your way. This blog could be so much longer, but let's start with some basics.
Essential Gear Checklist
The trusty backpack - The backbone of your adventure, a reliable backpack is a must-have. Opt for one that is lightweight, durable, and has enough room to store all your essentials. I tend to go for a slightly smaller pack of around 26 litre for summer/spring, and in the winter I would use 32 litre - 45 litre depending on the weather. You will carry more in the winter with a variety of layers, perhaps crampons/micro spikes, food, water etc. My motto - you can make a bag smaller, but you can't make it bigger! AND - don't forget to waterproof everything!
Hydration - When conquering the hills, staying hydrated is non-negotiable. Don't forget to pack a water bottle or a hydration pack to keep you energized throughout the day with water. It depends on how thirsty you get, but I would suggest 2 litres is a good start for a good day hike, more if you usually drink water regularly.

Food - Fuel your journey with easy-to-carry snacks like energy bars, trail mix, or fruits rather than quick fixes like sugary sweets. Keeping your energy levels up ensures you can conquer every hill with a smile on your face.
Mapping - Even if you're a master of directions, it's always wise to bring a map, compass, or GPS device. These tools not only prevent you from getting lost but also add an element of adventure to your trip. If you would like to know more about learning some map skills then check out my Navigation page for further details.
Read my upcoming blog on Maps or Tech? for more advice.
Boots or Shoes - Say goodbye to blisters and hello to comfort with sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes. Read my upcoming blog on These boots were made for walking for more advice. Your feet will thank you as you trek through rocky terrains and steep slopes.
Layering system - The weather in the hills can be unpredictable, so dress in layers to adapt to changing conditions. Include moisture-wicking fabrics to keep you dry and comfortable throughout your adventure. A fleece is a better alternative to a cotton sweater as cotton does not dry quickly, staying cold when wet. Always include in your bag a waterproof jacket and waterproof over trousers that you can take off when it's not raining and carry even in the summer! See my upcoming blog about waterproofs for more information.
First Aid Kit - Accidents happen, but being prepared can make all the difference. Pack a basic first aid kit with essentials like bandages, foil blanket and antiseptic wipes. You can buy ready made kits for the outdoors from good outdoor gear stores. Essentials would also be a whistle, head torch with spare batteries and something to charge your phone with, or keep one of your parties phone just for emergencies. Having the knowledge on how to use the first aid kit is also hugely beneficial - enhance your existing skills with a first aid course!
Mountain Rescue are a charity, made up with volunteers who give their time to help people in need in the mountains or any rural area away from roads. But, it can take time for them to get to you, so by being prepared you can help yourself whilst waiting. There is some fantastic advice on their website.
Sun Kit - Shield yourself from the sun's rays with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Even on cloudy days, UV protection is crucial at higher altitudes, and you don't need to even be at the top to be caught out! Stay cool in the heat by seeking shelter where you can, and if it's a really hot day, consider changing the time of day you go out, or, even your plans on where you will go.
Weather - Check the weather before you go - what is it due to be doing? what has it done over the last 24 hours? i.e. if it's rained a lot are there any stream crossings that may not be safe to cross? The weather in the mountains changes regularly, and can be different from one range to the next. Check MWIS for specific areas, and other weather apps such as the MET office, and don't be afraid to change your route or turn around if the weather changes for the worst when you are out.
